Cycling - Varried terrain, great weather and country roads wandering up & down through georgious scenery, are just a few reasons why Ramona is fast becoming "home" to cycling entheausists.
Rick Jordan, a San Diego Country Estates resident and avid cyclist competes in mountain bike racing in Big Bear. "The best trails in SDCE are the horse trails & the fire roads," says Rick. One of the most scenic rides is the 1.5 mile trail that runs along the creek at Ramona Oaks Park and by the Casey Tibbs Western Center."
Tom Maxfeld is another accomplished cyclist who often competes. Tom makes the 17 mile off road climb on his bike to Julian and also races in Big Bear. "We ride the paved roads occasionally for added strength and an occassional sustained workout" according to Tom. Tom rides 100+ miles a week!
Both Tom & Rick say the caliber of cyclists in ramona is impressive including Jess Swigger who made the Jr. Olympic Team at 15 and Greg Marini, a pro racer who is in the top 20 in the nation. Jess Swigger has been rated the top junior mountain bike racer for the past three years. He is now training at altitude in Wyoming in preparation for a series of national races. In 1996, mountain bike racing became an Olympic event. Don't be surprised if you see Swiggers on the U.S. Olympic Team and bringing home the Gold!
Another big reason Ramona is becoming such a cycling focal point for professional cycling is the prescense of Eddie Borysewicz, or "Eddie B."
